General comments
The first thing we noted about Murad Acne Complex was that it uses triclosan as an antibacterial agent (1,2). Triclosan kills bacteria relatively efficently, but may have harmful effects (3,4). In our opinion, triclosan, which is sometimes used in dish washing liquid and industrial hand soaps, should not be used in a skin product.
FDA-approved agents
In the most effective acne treatments, there is more than one main FDA-approved substance specifically approved to treat acne. Murad contains salisylic acid, which is known to only be effective against non-inflammatory acne lesions (5). It unclogs pores and prevents lesions, but it does not kill the bacteria that cause acne, or reduce the production of sebum. It may be effective against mild acne, but as soon as the treatment is no longer used, the acne will return as before.
We would expect most effective acne treatments to use benzoyl peroxide in some form, but Murad does not use this FDA-approved agent in their Acne Complex. However, the poducts do use sulfur to dry out the sebum.
Lasting effects
In the opinion of Acne Cures Guide, the product will cease working immediately when use is discontinued.
Natural ingredients
The treatment does include a number of natural ingredients, such as grape seed extract, olive tree extract and sitrus fruit extract. These are mainly antioxidant substances that enliven the skin and kill bacteria, although their effects in skin products have not been scientifically verified. They should contribute to the effectiveness against acne.
Side effects
Some users of Murad Acne Complex have complained about added redness to the skin, but overall, this side effect seems negligible. Those afflicted mainly have very fair complexions. The use of triclosan is a worry.
Fragrance
The fragrance of all the products in the treatment is pleasant and not too strong, and it seems to disappear after a while.
Noticeability
The products appear invisible on the skin.
Completeness
The treatment works by a triple effect of cleansing, treatment, and moisture. As such, it is relatively complete, but does not give as comprehensive a treatment as some competitors.
Price
The price does not appear high at first glance, but in the opinion of Acne Cures Guide, the limited effects of the treatment and use of triclosan detracts from its value. There are better products available at the same price.
Conclusion
Worth considering if you suffer from light acne and have tried other products to no effect.
